No Secret is a digital release written and produced by Toronto-based composer and musician Geoff Doner. This single is a remixed and rearranged version of a song from Geoff’s forthcoming EP Love More Real and features additional vocals by Andrea Battersby, Mikela Jay and Troy Jackson. Proceeds from sales will be donated to the Encampment Support Network in Toronto, a grassroots, community led organization providing for the needs of people who are currently unhoused and living in park encampments.

“No Secret” is a rally cry for those that need to hear it, a reminder that social inequities persist based on unequal access to resources and basic human rights. We all have a part to play in taking care of each other by dismantling broken systems and creating new ones that are entirely inclusive.

It's the middle of winter in Toronto, where the second wave of the pandemic has some citizens locked down. What options do unhoused citizens have to experience safety and respect and freedom from infection ? Fellow Toronto residents have stepped up to fill the gap between basic human needs and rights of vulnerable folks and the tone-deaf governmental responses to the affordable housing crisis which has included dismissal of peoples experience on the ground and worse- destruction of peoples temporary shelters without appropriate alternatives offered. Why are individuals and community organizations like ESN paying for our institutions' failure to provide safety to every citizen equally ?

It's no secret that everyone deserves the same human rights and that the ability to thrive is dependent upon some basic human requirements - freedom, water, food and a home.

Life is short, its end time uncertain and the same goes for our loved ones. We must move through our fears and recalibrate our energies towards a fruitful life and help others to do the same. I say for those that need to hear it because I have come to realize that most of my songs are directed at other white privileged people, like myself. I don't think that people that have been systematically oppressed or have the experience of generational trauma, fleeing war, fleeing environmental devastation due to global warming need a reminder that life is impermanent. When I hear people say anything is possible, this is true as long as you’ve got freedom, water, food and a home. I cringe when I see things like The Secret because there is no secret to living a fulfilling life. We need to make sure everyone has the means and support to thrive authentically, free from oppressive colonial corporate systems that exploit, extract and poison. I think the rest will take care of itself, like permaculture. Cultivate the best conditions and thriving will just happen.

100% of sales of this track go to the Toronto-based Encampment Support Network in aid of their urgently necessary work to support unhoused citizens seeking safety in temporary shelters like tents, tiny homes and foam domes in city parks.

ESN is an ad-hoc, volunteer-run network supporting people living in encampments in 6 locations throughout Toronto. This includes ESN Parkdale, ESN Trinity Bellwoods, ESN Scadding Court, ESN Moss Park, ESN LNP and ESN Cherry Beach. ESN is not a charitable organization we are group of people trying to build community, support our neighbours, and advocate for better conditions in encampments and demand long term housing in Toronto. We wish we didn’t have to exist and hope to dissolve once people get housing or the city starts providing people with what they need. This is not a sustainable situation, and we are not a charity.
